Etymology: Phony

The word phony can be traced back to around 1781, the same year Uranus was discovered and the first bagpipe competition occurred. At this point, the word was pronounced/spelled fawney and referred to a a ring that was sold as pure gold despite only being plated. The word eventually evolved into phony where it applies to anything believed to be ingenuine or fake.
